The Difference Between Mouth-to-Lung and Direct-to-Lung Vaping

If you’re brand-new to the world of vaping, you are probably discovering that things are a little more complex than you may have thought. For example, when it comes to the actual motion of vaping, you’ll have two different options: mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping and direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping. Both of these refer to how you are choosing to inhale vaper. Neither of these methods is better or worse. They are simply based on preference.

Here’s what you should know about both vapour delivery methods and which is right for you.

What is MTL Vaping?

If you’re making the switch from smoking to vaping, mouth-to-lung vaping is probably the motion that will make the most sense. This method should include long, smooth draws instead of short drags. When you’re using this method of vaping, the vapor will go in your mouth and you should hold the vapor there for several seconds before inhaling and allowing the vapor to go to your lungs. Then you can exhale.

If you want to use the MTL method, you should try a vape juice with a high ratio of propylene glycol. Generally, you will experience more of a throat hit with the MTL method. However, if you want a smoother throat hit with this type of vaping, you can try out nicotine salt vape juices. Mouth-to-lung vaping is a great way to try out new e-juice flavors because it allows you to get the full effect of the unique flavor. You’re allowing your tastebuds a special experience while the vapor remains in your mouth!

When looking for the right vape, you don’t need to be so concerned with power for MTL vaping. MTL is actually best with a lower amount of power. You should find coils with higher resistance, usually over 1 Ω. However, if coils have a lower resistance than that, but they say they are specially manufactured with MTL vaping in mind, check with your vape shop if you're unsure. 

What is DTL Vaping?

Direct-to-lung vaping is sometimes referred to as just “direct lung” or as “straight to lung” vaping. To successfully use the DTL method, take a drag that’s at least three to five seconds long. With this method, there’s no need to hold the vapor in your mouth. As soon as you inhale, you let the vapor travel straight to your lungs. The sensation is similar to taking in a deep breath. Then you can exhale the vapor clouds. 

If you want to do this method of vaping, you’ll need to ensure any airflow controls on your device are open. This allows you to get the most air in your inhale-like vaping method. The first time you try to vape direct-to-lung can be a bit of a shock, but, in time, you can get adjusted to this method and it may become your preferred way to vape.

What works best for DTL vaping is the opposite of what works for MTL vaping. Get an e-liquid with a higher vegetable glycerin ratio, such as 70% to 80% VG with just 20 to 30% PG. This should allow you to get a smoother hit even though you’ll see more clouds.

Since you want more vapour with the DTL delivery method, you also want lower resistance. Something that’s around 0.5 Ω will usually do the trick, but you may be able to go as low as 0.1 Ω. Your vape device for DTL should have a lot of power, coils with a larger surface area, and a tank that gets plenty of airflow.                                                                                                                 

Mouth-to-Lung and Direct-to-Lung Vaping: How to Know What’s Best for You

The best way to figure out which method is right for you might simply be to experiment and see which one feels best. Some devices are only suitable for one or the other method, so it’s important to read labels and do your research when buying a new product. That being said, there are certain types of people that tend to prefer MTL vaping and certain ones that prefer DTL.

Firstly, your amount of vaping experience is key. If you’re a brand-new vaper in Australia, it’s usually best to start with the mouth-to-lung method because most people think it’s simpler and has a larger margin for error. You’ll get a much tighter draw. If you go straight to the direct-to-lung method, you’ll probably end up coughing quite a bit since it’s more difficult to get used to. 

Evaluating what you want out of your vaping experience is another helpful way to determine what type of vaping you might prefer. For example, if you’re all about maximizing the flavor of your vape juice, mouth-to-lung may be preferable. This is because there’s less air in your vape and you are letting the vapor actually sit in your mouth and get acquainted with your tastebuds. However, some people actually believe the flavor they get through the direct-to-lung method is superior because it is more concentrated.

If you crave big clouds and an intense vaping experience, DTL is likely the way to go. You’ll be able to blow some pretty impressive vapor clouds! If you want a vaping experience with a higher amount of nicotine that more closely simulates smoking a cigarette, mouth-to-lung is definitely your best option. On the flipside, if you're looking to do big clouds , you should go for direct-to-lung.
